Summer school "Cross-border cooperation to support environment and sustainable development in the Baltic Sea Region"

Summer school "Cross-border cooperation to support environment and sustainable development in the Baltic Sea Region" took place on the 20-25th of August, 2007 in the town of Tartu, Estonia. It was held by Peipsi Center for Trans-border cooperation within the frames of BEN and BEN-EAST projects.
The school was organized for the specialists working in the sphere of cross-border cooperation and aimed at gaining knowledge and practical skills, exchanging of experience and preparation of new project ideas that could be implemented in the Baltic Sea Region. About 50 participants from the Baltic States, Russia, Belarus, Austria and Poland representing BEN and BEN-EAST projects' partners' network and some other organizations got the opportunity to listen to the lectures hold by the invited experts on Northern Dimension policy, implementation of various projects aimed at developing of cross-border territories and held within the frames of INTERREG and ENPI (European Neighbourhood Partnership Instrument) programmes, Euroregions' activities and environmental policy.
Besides listening to the lectures, participants were involved in the training sessions that covered different stages of the project cycle - starting from working out a project application and ending with a project implementation and its financial management. The knowledge gained during these training sessions was used by the participants while formulizing their own project ideas concerning development of cross-border regions in the field of education, economics and efficient management of natural resources. Best project ideas were pointed out by the experts who followed group discussions.
Out-of-class activities were an important part of the summer school. They included a trip on an ancient barge along the Emajogi River; an excursion to the Estonian-Russian border-crossing point Koidula followed by the presentation of procedures and rules of crossing the border; visiting Setu folk open air museum; a trip to the Emaj?gi-Suursoo nature protection area and its Nature Education Center.
All the events of the summer school were held in English.
