BEN-East focuses on youth affairs in Murmansk
Partners in the Baltic Euroregional Network-East (BEN-East) project met in Murmansk on 26-27 June at the international seminar on "cross-border cooperation models of the Baltic Sea and Barents regions". The aim of the seminar is to gather cooperation partners from both regions to exchange experiences and lessons learnt as well as to assess prospects for future regional development with a specific focus on youth affairs in the international cooperation. The project participants represent St. Petersburg, Leningrad region, Republic of Karelia, Pskov, Kaliningrad and Murmansk regions, Belarus as well as Lithuania, Norway and Finland.
The seminar was hosted by the Department of Youth affairs of the Murmansk region. Mr. Alexander Makarov, First Deputy Governor of Murmansk region, Mr. Arne Grove, Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers' Information office in Kaliningrad and Mrs. Laila Dalhaug, the Advisor of the Norwegian Barents Secretariat addressed the seminar with the welcome word.
Murmansk region is very active in the international cooperation of the Barents region through various projects. The Barents region includes 13 regions of Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway with approximate population of 5.5 million. The major topics of the seminar organized in Murmansk include overviews of cultural, innovative, business and political cooperation of the Barents region and the Baltic Sea region focusing on youth affairs. It is expected that the seminar would result in strengthening partner networks and interaction between the two regions.
